Indian Navy MH-60R ASW helicopter undertakes maiden landing on Destroyer INS Kolkata
Mumbai: The Indian Navy’s newly inducted MH60R helicopter undertook its maiden landing on the indigenously designed and constructed destroyer INS Kolkata in the Arabian Sea on Friday. The achievement is a major boost to the Indian Navy’s Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capability.
Till now, the Navy received three MH-60R multi-role helicopters from the United States. Notably, India signed a deal with the US to procure 24 MH-60R helicopters also known as “Romeo”. The estimated cost f the deal is USD 2.4 billion.
The induction of these helicopters has enhanced the Indian NAvy’s three-dimensional capabilities. These helicopters are reportedly modified and equipped with several unique weapons.
Notably, the purchase of these helicopters was cleared by the Indian cabinet in February 2020, almost weeks before the then US President Donald Trump’s visit to India. MH-60R is a powerful, and reliable attack helicopter built by Lockheed Martin-Sikorsky. It is equipped with weapons, including torpedoes, air-to-ground missiles and rockets, and crew-served guns.
