Indian Navy plans to equip 14 warships with indigenous VL-SRSAM
The Indian Navy has decided to equip 14 frontline warships with the indigenous Vertical Launched Short-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) including the INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya aircraft carriers.
The VL-SRSM is based on the Astra Mark 1 air-to-air missile that has been enhanced with the addition of thrust vectoring that can neutralize high-speed airborne targets within a range of 50 kilometers.
The missiles will be stored and operated from specially designed compartments ensuring controlled conditions for the weapon system while also improving the shelf life of the missiles.
VL-SRSAM is intended to be used on board warships that are already in service for quite some time including large warships like Destroyers and Frigates which already have Barak-8 Medium to Long Range Surface to Air Missile as its main defence. VL-SRSAM will complement Barak-8 SAM in those warships in the long run.
