Indian Navy to field BMD systems on future warships for protection of Aircraft Carrier Battle Groups
The Indian Navy is taking steps to get approval for the second Vikrant-class Aircraft Carrier and has plans to procure a 3rd larger Aircraft Carrier of 65,000-tonne displacement.
Aircraft Carrier battle groups will be more vulnerable due to the development of modern Anti-ship ballistic missiles and Hypersonic anti-ship cruise missiles and China will also pass some of its advanced anti-ship ballistic missiles and anti-ship cruise missiles to Pakistan for which the Indian Navy is planning to add multi-layered air defense coverage to its Aircraft Carrier battle groups that will able to neutralize Next Generation anti-ship weapons under Phase-II of Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) program.

India has plans to equip its frontline warships and Future Missile Cruisers (Next Generation Destroyers) with long-range Interceptor missiles designed for both low exo-atmospheric and indo-atmospheric interception of long-range ballistic missiles.
