Indian Parliamentary Committee Calls for Enhanced Border Management with Bangladesh due to Illegal Migration

A Parliamentary Committee has voiced serious concerns over the impact of illegal migration from Bangladesh, particularly the demographic changes it’s causing in Indo-Bangladesh border villages and other parts of India. In response to these challenges, the committee has urged the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to collaborate closely with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to address this pressing issue.

The committee’s apprehensions stem from recurring incidents of cross-border terrorism, illegal migration, the smuggling of counterfeit currency, and the trafficking of drugs and weapons originating from across the Bangladesh border. While the MEA has raised concerns about illegal migration, there’s been limited progress in addressing the issue, and the bilateral institutional mechanism in place has proven insufficient in effectively managing the situation.

India shares an extensive international border of approximately 4,096 kilometers with Bangladesh. This border intersects five Indian states: Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and West Bengal. In order to address boundary and border-related matters, established bilateral mechanisms like the Joint Boundary Working Group and Joint Boundary Conference are held at regular intervals.

The Parliamentary Committee is now advocating for improved management of the Indo-Bangladesh Border, aiming to mitigate issues such as infiltration and cross-border smuggling. The report highlights the necessity to strengthen the existing bilateral mechanisms responsible for overseeing this extensive border region.
