On the occasion of Goa Liberation Day, the Indian Navy presented a model of the nation’s newest locally-build stealth-guided missile destroyer, INS Mormugao, to the state administration on Monday. The Western Naval Command’s Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Vice Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant attended the event at Mormugao Harbour in Vasco.
According to officials, the 30-foot-long model will remain on display in Vasco City. Speaking to the gathering, Sawant stated that this vessel has 75% indigenous content, a considerable increase over the destroyers of the previous class.
“INS Mormugao has the true spirit of Make in India and our endeavour of becoming Atmanirbhar Bharat. The ship’s association with Goa is a symbol of the state’s growing maritime contribution and India’s technological prowess. I am sure the ship will be the true flag bearer of Goa as it sails all over the world,” Sawant asserted.
“December 18 marks 61 years of Operation Vijay. Today is also the eve of Goa Liberation Day,” the CM said.
On December 19, Goa Liberation Day is celebrated to remember the military operation known as “Operation Vijay” that led to the region’s liberation from Portuguese rule.
“The Indian Navy played crucial role in the liberation of Goa. The Goa operation was the first time the navy was engaged as a part of tri-service operations,” Sawant said.
