Russian Chechen force receives first batch of Chinese armoured vehicles
The president of the autonomous Russian republic of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, showed in a video posted on his social profiles the new equipment for his military units, including the Tiger armored vehicles produced by the Chinese company Shaanxi Baoji Special Vehicles.
Kadyrov’s units have been widely used in the conflict in Ukraine and for days the Chechen leader has been proposing to send his men to defend the Russian region of Belgorod, which has been subject to Ukrainian incursions for weeks.
There is no confirmation that these vehicles can be used in the conflict, but it would be a risky precedent for China which could suffer Western sanctions for having supplied arms to the Russian Federation. In the video, Kadyrov does not expressly refer to these means, but states that the armaments shown were purchased after the Russian military aggression in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022.
Shaanxi Baoji Special Vehicles Manufacturing is considered a privately owned company, but such companies are also known to be subject to various forms of state control in China. The 4X4 Tiger was presented to the public for the first time in 2012. It is an armored personnel carrier derived from the ZBF-05, itself developed on the chassis of a licensed version of the Iveco 40.10WM.
Conceived for military and police applications, the vehicle is powered by a 200 horsepower Cummins Isde30-200 diesel engine, can reach a speed of 115 kilometers per hour, has a range of between 500 and 600 kilometers and can carry up to 9 servicemen fully equipped. The vehicle is protected against 7,62mm shells, and can be equipped with automatic weapons of different calibers on a central turret. A few dozen specimens have so far been exported to the Bahamas, Bolivia and Somalia.
