S-300 air defence: Israel reportedly targets Iran’s S-300 Air Defence System in Isfahan strikes

Last week, Iran’s Isfahan province was hit by drone and missile strikes, reportedly from Israel. The targeted region housed Iran’s nuclear facility and air defence systems. While Israel neither confirmed nor denied the attacks, American news agencies attributed them to Israel. This escalation follows Iran’s recent multi-pronged attack on Israel using drones, cruise, and ballistic missiles.
Analysis of Satellite Images
The New York Times and BBC analyzed satellite images of the strike site. The images reveal the absence of the Russian S-300 Surface-Air anti-ballistic missile defence system, which was previously positioned near Isafan International Airport. The latest image from April 19 shows the area devoid of the S-300 system, indicating it was the target of the attack. The system includes radar-equipped vehicles and distinctive missile launchers.

Damage Assessment
The strike reportedly damaged the S-300 system’s radar, crucial for directing missiles, while the missile launchers remained intact. Iranian state media, IRNA, confirmed no missile attacks had occurred, and Iran’s air defence system had not been activated. However, the satellite images show damage to the facility.

Regarding the absence of any detection of incoming threats, two Iranian officials said, “Iran’s military had not detected anything entering Iran’s airspace on Friday, including drones, missiles and aircraft,” as reported by The New York Times. Farzin Nadimi, a Senior Fellow at the Washington Institute, told Iran International, “The image shows clearly that the system’s engagement radar, which guides the surface-to-air missiles, has been destroyed.”

Unconfirmed Claims
The extent of the damage and the weapons used by Israel remain unclear, as both sides have not confirmed details. Western officials suggest Israel’s attack aimed to demonstrate its ability to bypass Iran’s defence systems undetected. Notably, the missile and aircraft involved did not enter Jordanian airspace, as per Western officials.Russia supplied the S-300 air defence system to Iran in 2016, causing concerns in Israel. However, in 2010, Russia canceled a previous deal to supply the system following pressure from the West.
