India has issued a warning to its citizens, urging them to steer clear of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and to avoid joining the Russian army. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) made this statement following reports that some Indian nationals have signed up for support jobs with the Russian army in the conflict zone.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaishwal emphasized the Indian government’s concern, stating, “We are aware that a few Indian nationals have signed up for support jobs with the Russian Army.” Jaishwal highlighted that the Indian embassy in Moscow has been actively engaging with Russian authorities to secure the early discharge of any Indian nationals involved in such roles.

“We urge all Indian nationals to exercise due caution and stay away from this conflict,” Jaishwal reiterated.

The issue came to light after Mohammad Sufiyan, a resident of Hyderabad, was reportedly deceived by agents and forced into fighting for Russia in the Ukraine conflict. His family has pleaded with the central government and the Ministry of External Affairs to safely evacuate the trapped youths and to take strict action against the agents responsible.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MP Asaduddin Owaisi has also raised concerns over the matter, urging the Indian government to intervene and bring back the trapped youths. “The Narendra Modi government should hold talks with the Russian government and bring back the 12 youths trapped in the Russia-Ukraine war,” AIMIM posted on X.

Imran, Sufiyan’s brother, recounted the events leading to his brother’s involvement. He mentioned that Sufiyan was recruited by the Baba Blocks Company, which operates in Dubai, Delhi, and Mumbai. The company allegedly misled the youths, promising them jobs as army helpers but later deploying them inside the Ukrainian borders.

Despite reaching out to the Embassy and the Ministry of External Affairs for assistance, Imran expressed frustration over the lack of concrete help. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, calling on the government to evacuate the stranded youths and take strict action against the involved agents.

In response to the situation, the Indian government has assured its commitment to liaising with Russian authorities for the safe return of any Indian nationals involved in support roles with the Russian army. They have advised citizens to remain cautious and avoid getting entangled in the conflict in Ukraine.
