India and US Launch 19th Edition of ‘Yudh Abhyas’ Joint Military Exercise in Alaska

In a demonstration of their deepening strategic partnership, the armed forces of India and the United States have embarked on the 19th edition of the ‘Yudh Abhyas’ joint military exercise in Alaska. This two-week exercise is part of ongoing efforts to enhance cooperation and interoperability between the two countries’ armed forces, marking another milestone in their growing defense collaboration.

The Indian Army contingent, comprising 350 personnel, has already arrived at Fort Wainwright in Alaska, eagerly anticipating the commencement of the event. The exercise will encompass a diverse range of complex military drills designed to promote mutual learning and strengthen the bonds between the participating forces.

Key areas of focus during the exercise include combat engineering, obstruction clearance, and improvised explosive device (IED) warfare. Both armies will engage in tactical drills to enhance their interoperability, especially in the context of conducting United Nations peacekeeping operations. The exchange of experiences and best practices is expected to contribute to their collective knowledge and capabilities.

The exercise, scheduled from its launch date until October 8, centers on the theme ‘Employment of an Integrated Battle Group in Mountain/Extreme Climatic Conditions’ under Chapter VII of the United Nations mandate. It encompasses a wide array of objectives, including the validation of integrated battle groups’ effectiveness against hostile forces at the brigade level. Additionally, it addresses integrated surveillance grid deployment, heliborne or airborne operations, and logistical and casualty management in high-altitude and extreme climatic conditions.

As part of the exercise, command post-exercises and expert academic discussions on selected topics will be conducted, facilitating comprehensive learning and collaboration between the Indian and US military personnel.

This annual joint military exercise highlights the commitment of both nations to enhancing their defense capabilities and fostering a closer defense partnership. The exchange of expertise and the shared focus on improving interoperability reinforce the robust and dynamic relationship between India and the United States in the realm of security and defense.
