In a strategic move, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has initiated the process of acquiring 20 cutting-edge Passive Surveillance Systems (PSS) under the ambitious Make in India program. This procurement is poised to bolster the nation’s air defense capabilities significantly.

The IAF has recently unveiled a Request for Information (RFI) to facilitate the acquisition of these state-of-the-art PSS units. This move emphasizes the commitment to fortify India’s defense infrastructure through indigenous production.

The Passive Surveillance Systems (PSS) are designed to play a pivotal role in Air Defense Surveillance. These sophisticated systems aim to elevate the level of situational awareness and ground-based Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) gathering.

Key Capabilities of the PSS System

The selected Passive Surveillance Systems must exhibit a spectrum of capabilities, including:

  1. Detection: The ability to identify potential threats with precision.
  2. Interception: Intercepting both active and passive targets effectively.
  3. Location: Pinpointing the exact location of identified targets.
  4. Identification: Providing a seamless process for target identification.
  5. Tracking: Ensuring continuous and reliable tracking of targets in real-time.

360° Surveillance and Beyond

The PSS Systems are expected to deliver exceptional performance with their passive 360° surveillance capabilities. This revolutionary feature will significantly enhance the IAF’s ability to monitor its airspace comprehensively.

Extended Operations and Signal Intelligence

The IAF requires these systems to operate continuously for an impressive 100 hours. This extended operational capacity ensures sustained surveillance without compromise. Additionally, the Passive Surveillance Systems will incorporate cutting-edge Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) capabilities, further strengthening the nation’s defense apparatus.

The Passive Surveillance System will boast a sophisticated architecture comprising:

  1. Remote Receiving Stations (RRS): Establishing decentralized data reception points for enhanced efficiency.
  2. Master Receive and Control Station (MRCS): Serving as the centralized hub for receiving and controlling data from the entire network.

The procurement of 20 Passive Surveillance Systems marks a significant stride in fortifying India’s air defense capabilities. This move not only showcases the IAF’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge technology but also aligns seamlessly with the Make in India initiative. As these advanced systems become an integral part of the nation’s defense infrastructure, India stands poised to secure its airspace with unwavering vigilance and technological prowess.
