South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean interested in Indian Navy P-75I submarine program; Offers its KSS-III batch-2 submarine with fuel cell based AIP and ESS technology
Hanwha Ocean formerly known as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co has expressed its interest in participating in Indian Navy’s Project-75I submarine program and has offered its KSS-III Batch 2 submarine equipped with fuel cell based AIP technology and advanced Energy Storage System (ESS) technology.
The ESS technology can be integrated into the submarine’s battery pack which would enhance the performance and operational capabilities of the submarine.
The KSS-III Batch 2 features an increased number of vertical launching cells for submarine-launched cruise missiles like BrahMos, Nirbhay, or under development LR-LACM.
Now it has to be seen what the Hanwha Ocean does in the coming months on the P-75I tender, they have to collaborate with L&T if they want to participate in the P-75I program, because Mazagaon Dock and L&T were the two shipyards that were shortlisted to manufacture P-75I submarines in their shipyard with complete technology transfer, and Mazagaon Dock has already signed an MoU with German shipbuilder ThyssenKrupp Marines to manufactures their HDW Type-212 class submarines if selected, so only the L&T remains as the other shipyard, so Hanwha group will have to collaborate with them to participate in the P-75I tender.
It is interesting to note that the South Korean KSS-III submarine is originally based on German HDW Type-212 class submarines with the addition of some new South Korean technologies and minor design modifications, so basically Indian Navy is getting two German submarine types on offer with some addition of latest technologies and minor design modifications.
