China Places Early Warning Radar Near LAC | What Does It Mean?

New Delhi: China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has placed a sophisticated early warning radar 32 km north west of Lake Mansarovar, roughly 100 km from the border.

The installation of the system, a Flat Bowl Early Warning Radar, is another example of the Chinese either bringing forward new weapon systems or building up infrastructure close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The Chinese have unusual names for radars, some of them being called Rice Bowl or Rice Screen or Great Wall. But the buildup has been regular and systematic.

The Flat Bowl is an upgraded version of an earlier system and it’s range resolution is considerably better. The installation is clearly to strengthen air defence capabilities. It is a hilly area, and the PLA has, expectedly, placed it in an appropriate manner. It is also sufficiently far away from the LAC.

This is also a time for considerable movement in Tibet for the PLA. Units, there in Tibet, are going back to be replaced by newer ones. 6 Combined Armed Division has been de-inducted and replaced by 8 Combined Armed Division. So, there are fewer tents, vehicles and sheds in logistically important areas like Yecheng or Khurnak.
