Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (CPCL) has initiated the supply of Jet Propellant-5 (JP-5) grade aviation fuel to the Indian defence forces through the Chennai–Bengaluru oil pipeline (CBPL). This move marks a significant development as CPCL’s refinery is the only one in the country manufacturing this specialized grade of fuel.
JP-5 is known for its high flash point, making it ideal for military aviation applications. Previously, this fuel was transported to its destination via coastal tankers, but the introduction of the pipeline supply system is set to enhance logistics and reduce transportation costs.
CPCL, in collaboration with Indian Oil, has established a standard operating procedure for transporting JP-5 through the pipeline, ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of this critical aviation fuel. The fuel is now being sent to the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) terminal at Devanagonthi near Bangalore, where it will be accessible for the Indian defence forces.
The successful transfer of a batch of JP-5 from CPCL in Chennai to Bengaluru via the CBPL marks a milestone in this initiative. Arvind Kumar, Managing Director of CPCL, emphasized that the company is also actively involved in producing other specialized fuels, such as JP-7 for DRDO’s scramjet engines and ISROSENE for ISRO’s rocket propulsion.
These initiatives align with India’s vision of “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat,” emphasizing self-reliance and domestic production. The introduction of pipeline transportation for JP-5 aviation fuel streamlines logistics and supports the efficient supply of critical resources to the Indian defence forces. This development not only enhances operational efficiency but also contributes to India’s broader goals of self-sufficiency and economic sustainability.
