The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) is on the verge of approving a significant contract for the production of 156 Light Combat Helicopters (LCH), named Prachand. Valued at approximately ₹45,000 crore, this proposal is anticipated to be submitted to the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) by late August, following the establishment of a new central government in mid-June.
According to sources within the defense sector, the Army and Air Force, which have already inducted a limited batch of 15 LCHs, have suggested minor upgrades. These enhancements include the addition of an autopilot system and a ground collision avoidance system to boost safety and operational performance.
Developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the Prachand marks a significant advancement in India’s push for self-reliance in defense technology. This multi-role combat helicopter is engineered to perform exceptionally well in the challenging conditions encountered by the Indian armed forces, such as deserts and high-altitude areas.

The Prachand features advanced technologies that reduce its visual, aural, radar, and infrared signatures, making it an ideal platform for stealth operations. Additionally, its enhanced crashworthiness features improve crew safety and survivability in hostile environments.
The LCH is a highly versatile platform capable of executing a wide range of missions, including:
- Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR)
- Destroying Enemy Air Defenses (DEAD)
- Counter-insurgency (CI) operations
- Engaging slow-moving aircraft and drones (RPAs)
- High-altitude bunker busting
- Counter-insurgency operations in diverse terrains (jungles, urban environments)
- Providing crucial support to ground forces
This development underscores India’s commitment to bolstering its defense capabilities through indigenous technology and production.
