In a recent speech at the NDTV Defence Summit 2024, Dr. Samir V Kamat, Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), highlighted the urgent need to develop advanced sensors and radars capable of detecting stealth fighter jets and hypersonic cruise and glide weapons. Kamat emphasized the crucial role of technology in maintaining strategic superiority in modern warfare.
Kamat described the challenge faced by defense establishments worldwide as a “Cat and Mouse Game.” As stealth and hypersonic technologies become more prevalent, there is a growing demand for sensor technologies to counter these sophisticated threats. Modern warfare’s asymmetrical nature requires continuous innovation and adaptation to effectively counter emerging threats.
Sensor technology plays a vital role in neutralizing evolving threats, Kamat stressed. With the increasing use of stealth aircraft and hypersonic weapons, conventional detection methods are no longer sufficient. The development of next-generation sensor systems capable of detecting these elusive targets is essential. DRDO’s efforts in this area demonstrate a commitment to enhancing India’s defensive capabilities and ensuring strategic preparedness in an era of rapid technological advancement.
The rise of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones has transformed military operations, offering unprecedented agility and reconnaissance capabilities. However, Kamat predicted a shift in drone warfare dynamics in the near future. He anticipated that within the next 2 to 3 years, advances in drone-neutralizing technology would significantly reduce the effectiveness of drones or make them obsolete.
