Design phase of the indigenous Project-76 conventional AIP powered submarines to be complete by 2026
The Indian Navy is poised to bolster its underwater warfare capabilities through the ambitious Project-76, a venture aimed at developing cutting-edge indigenous conventional diesel submarines. Finalization of the ongoing Project-75I (India) submarine acquisition deal is awaited, while the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) is diligently engaged in expediting the design phase of Project-76 submarines, with aspirations to achieve a finalized design concept by 2026.
At the core of Project-76 lies the vision of crafting diesel-electric attack submarines equipped with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP). These formidable underwater vessels, expected to boast a submerged displacement of 3,000 tons, are slated to surpass their predecessors, including the Project-75I (India) and Project-75 submarines, both constructed based on foreign designs. Insider sources intimate that the Navy aims to position Project-76 as the natural successor to the iconic Sindhughosh (Kilo) class, underscoring a commitment to maintaining a robust 3,000-ton class.
This undertaking assumes paramount importance in India’s pursuit of maritime dominance. Project-76 aims to amalgamate the best technological aspects from Project-75, rooted in French expertise, and the know-how derived from German/Spanish collaboration in Project-75I (India). This fusion of knowledge is further augmented by the valuable insights gained through the concurrent nuclear attack submarine program. Additionally, the Indian Navy is actively fostering collaboration with both government-owned Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and private-sector behemoths to drive the development of avant-garde technologies tailored to the program’s unique requirements.
The procurement plan for Project-76 outlines the acquisition of six submarines in two distinct batches, with the latter incorporating even more advanced features. While the full-fledged execution of the project is anticipated post-2030, the commencement of sea trials for the inaugural submarine is earmarked for 2036.
Beyond being a mere submarine acquisition initiative, Project-76 signifies a bold stride toward achieving strategic independence in a critical maritime domain.
