The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro (L&T), is set to embark on a groundbreaking initiative to develop a versatile family of combat vehicles on the same adaptable chassis of the Zorawar Light Tank, tailored to meet specific requirements.
The combat vehicle versions that are planned to be developed on the chassis of the Zorawar light tank are as follows: a twin 30 mm Self-Propelled Anti-Aircraft Weapon System enhances the Army’s air defense capabilities, providing a mobile and versatile solution. A Short Range Air Defense System for countering aerial threats in dynamic environments will most probably be equipped with an indigenous VSHORAD system that is developed by DRDO and is under testing. An Engineer Vehicle, that will operate in tandem with Ground Unmanned Vehicles.

The maiden Zorawar light tank prototype is currently undergoing critical trials at the L&T facility, marking a crucial phase in its development. Following these trials, extensive user testing will be conducted in the challenging mountainous regions near the China border. User feedback will drive adaptations and modifications, shaping the final design before initiating the initial limited series production.
The Indian Army has already demonstrated its confidence in the Zorawar Light Tank, placing an order for the initial batch of 50 tanks. However, the overall requirement exceeds 350 tanks, indicating the substantial demand for these agile and adaptable combat vehicles. With the possibility of an increase in demand in the near future, the DRDO’s venture is poised to play a pivotal role in meeting the evolving needs of India’s defense forces.
As the Zorawar light tank progresses through trials and user testing, the focus remains on user-centric adaptations. The collaborative efforts of DRDO and L&T aim to fine-tune the platform based on real-world requirements. This iterative approach ensures that the final product aligns seamlessly with the operational needs and challenges faced by the Indian Army.
DRDO’s initiative to develop new variants based on the Zorawar Light Tank platform is not just a technological advancement but a strategic move towards enhancing India’s defense capabilities. This ambitious project exemplifies innovation, adaptability, and a forward-looking approach in catering to the evolving demands of modern warfare.
