The Indian Air Force (IAF) anticipates a significant milestone as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) advances towards comprehensive testing of the Astra Mark 2 beyond visual range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM). Recent reports indicate that developmental trials in its full configuration are on the horizon.
The Astra Mk2 represents a notable advancement over its predecessor, the Astra Mk1. With an anticipated range of 160 kilometers, it demonstrates a remarkable 45% increase compared to the Mk1’s range of 110 kilometers. This enhancement places it in direct competition with the AIM-120D missile, potentially positioning the Indian Air Force for a tactical edge in airborne confrontations.
The Astra Mk2 program has achieved significant milestones through a series of successful trials, encompassing captive flight tests, captive missile ejections, and unguided launches. As it moves forward, the program is poised to undertake more intricate evaluations.
The forthcoming testing phase will include critical assessments such as Electronic Target Engagement. During this stage, the missile’s Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) seeker, a pivotal element for detecting and tracking adversary aircraft, will undergo rigorous examination. Subsequent tests will focus on evaluating the missile’s precision in realistic combat scenarios, incorporating maneuvering targets with the utilization of Pilotless Target Aircraft.
The testing roadmap for the Astra Mk2 spans several years, encompassing diverse launch environments and addressing both maximum and minimum ranges. This holistic approach is designed to validate the effectiveness of the Astra Mk2 across a spectrum of operational contexts.
As DRDO progresses towards conducting full configuration testing of the Astra Mk2, anticipation grows within the Indian Air Force community regarding the potential operational capabilities and strategic advantages offered by this advanced BVRAAM system.
