The Border Security Force (BSF) has announced that it shot down 100 Pakistani drones engaged in smuggling narcotics, arms, and ammunition into Indian territory in 2023. The BSF, based in Punjab, said that it has adopted a comprehensive ‘three-pronged strategy’ to curb the illicit movement of drugs and other contraband across the border.

The BSF Punjab Frontier, in a series of posts, reported, “Till now, in 2023, BSF Punjab has successfully shot down or recovered 100 Pakistani drones being used by anti-national elements to smuggle narcotics, arms, and ammunition into Indian territory.” The force also shared its accomplishment in apprehending individuals involved in facilitating the smuggling activities through drones.

Highlighting the multifaceted approach, the BSF stated, “BSF has implemented a three-pronged strategy, with the objectives of curtailing the drug supply, fostering awareness against drug abuse, and empowering the youth with skills to channelize their energy, thereby facilitating meaningful employment opportunities.”

In a recent incident on Monday, the BSF thwarted a smuggling attempt in Amritsar when a Pakistani drone violated Indian airspace. During a search operation in Ranian village, Amritsar, BSF troops seized 434 grams of heroin wrapped with adhesive tape. The operation was conducted after specific information from the BSF regarding smuggling through a drone.

“On 25 December 2023, during morning hours, on specific information of BSF regarding smuggling through a drone on the outskirts of Vill – Ranian & Rear Kakkar, District – Amritsar, an Operation was planned,” BSF stated in a post.

The BSF troops recovered a packet of heroin weighing 434 grams, wrapped with transparent adhesive tape. The drone dropped the contraband before returning to Pakistan. Another attempt by smugglers to push narcotics into Indian territory via drone was also foiled by vigilant BSF personnel.
