HAL trying to draw up support from Private Defence Industry for the erstwhile Joint MTA Program
Model of Scrapped Indo-Russian Joint Multirole Transport Aircraft or Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA)

State-run aerospace behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) management is trying to draw up support for the development of an indigenous Medium Transport aircraft Program in the country by having talks with many public and private sector players that could be part of the supply chain for yet to be the proposed program.

Last year idrw.org had reported that HAL’s Chairman and Managing Director R. Madhavan in an interview had said that ” he is confident about the maturity level of indigenous capabilities in the aerospace sector along with private sector partners, India can come up with indigenous offerings not only for military transport aircraft but also for the complete spectrum of civil aircraft “.

HAL is proposing the development of Medium Transporter that can haul a 20-ton payload and also be used for troop movement. Brazilian company Embraer already has been pushing its C-390 Millennium to fill the gap that was left after India walked out of the Indo-Russian proposed Medium Transport Aircraft program due to differences in the choice of the engine.

idrw.org has been told that the final configuration of the jets can be formalized only after IAF sends its official requirements but HAL is only engaging with other companies to gauge the potential capabilities for such development. HAL is unhappy that the proposed Regional Transport Aircraft proposed by the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) is yet to get official clearance from the government and now plans to make its offer for the development of Transporter and Civil variant based on it, but it is not clear if Indian Air force is interested and will be ready to be on board.
