India Boosts Presence in Indian Ocean with New Naval Airbase on Minicoy Islands; To Operate Rafale-M and P-8I aircraft just 258 kms away from Maldives

India is countering its loss of influence in the Maldives by establishing a new naval airbase in the Lakshadweep Islands. This move is strategically important for India’s presence in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The new base, named INS Jatayu and located on Minicoy Island, is just 258 kilometers away from Maldives, will serve as a key hub for Indian Navy operations in the Western part of the IOR.

The significance of the Maldives lies not in its size but in its strategic location along crucial maritime trade routes. With China gaining influence in the Maldives, India is strengthening its position by enhancing its presence in the Lakshadweep Islands. The inauguration of INS Jatayu, scheduled for early March, coincides with India’s withdrawal of troops from the Maldives.

INS Jatayu will play a vital role in maritime surveillance and defense, bolstering India’s Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) and ensuring better monitoring of developments in the region. Initially commissioned with a small contingent, the base will eventually accommodate fighter aircraft like Rafales, projecting India’s naval might.

The commissioning ceremony of INS Jatayu will be a significant event, with India showcasing its naval power by deploying both of its aircraft carriers, INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant, along with about 15 warships. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be present aboard INS Vikramaditya for the ceremony.

INS Jatayu will be equipped to handle various types of military aircraft, including Rafale Marine fighter jets and P-8I Maritime Patrol Aircraft. Plans to construct a new airfield at Minicoy and extend the existing airfield on Agatti Island are underway, potentially boosting tourism in the region.

India’s efforts to strengthen its presence in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, coupled with anti-piracy operations in the Indian Ocean, demonstrate its commitment to safeguarding its strategic and economic interests amidst growing Chinese influence in the region.

China’s increasing naval presence in the Indian Ocean has prompted India to enhance its defenses in the island territories. India has also been conducting anti-piracy operations, showcasing its capability as a blue-water navy.

The establishment of INS Jatayu and the bolstering of India’s presence in the Lakshadweep Islands are part of a broader strategy to counter Chinese expansionism in the region. China has been looking to establish its own military facilities in the Indian Ocean, as seen in its efforts in Sri Lanka. However, India is determined to protect its interests and maintain its dominance in the region.

With the commissioning of INS Jatayu and the deployment of advanced military aircraft, India is sending a clear message of its intent to protect its maritime interests in the Indian Ocean. The base will serve as a key asset in India’s naval strategy, allowing it to maintain a strong presence in the region and respond effectively to any security threats that may arise.
