The recent deactivation of a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) points to the cancellation of the scheduled missile launch over the Bay of Bengal. The area designated by the NOTAM covered a span of 3,550 kilometers, sparking speculation about a potential test involving the K4 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).
This speculation arises following India’s recent successful test of the Agni-V missile, equipped with Multiple Independently Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) capability.
Although the precise reasons for the cancellation remain undisclosed, the deactivation of the NOTAM serves as confirmation of the scrapped activity.
Military experts and defense analysts believe that the presence of the Chinese Spy Ship Xiang Yang Hong 01 near India’s shores in the Bay of Bengal, under the guise of research activities, is likely to be the primary cause for the NOTAM cancellation, although there can be other reasons too like bad weather at the test launch site or area.
It is widely believed that this Chinese vessel may be stationed adjacent to Indian waters, to gather data of the magnetic anomaly of the Nuclear Ballistic Missile Submarine INS Arihant or the flight trajectory of the missile itself, thereby acquiring valuable insights into its designated flight path and technological components. Such intelligence could potentially aid China in developing countermeasures against these missiles or submarines.
