India Offers Prachand Attack Helicopter and ATAGS Howitzer to Philippines on Soft Loan

In a strategic move, India has escalated its defense export initiatives to the Philippines, presenting proposals for local manufacturing of attack helicopters, artillery guns, and bulletproof vests during recent negotiations. This follows India’s successful procurement order for BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and its earlier offering of LCA-Tejas fighter jets and ALH-Dhruv helicopters. As an added incentive, India has sweetened the deal with a soft loan featuring a low interest rate and an extended repayment period.

Strengthening Ties: Key Components of the Offer

1. Locally Manufactured Defense Equipment

India’s proposal includes assistance in the local manufacturing of LCH Prachand attack helicopters and ATAGS self-propelled artillery guns. This collaborative effort aims to enhance the Philippines’ domestic defense production capabilities, fostering self-reliance in the defense sector.

2. Bulletproof Vests by MKU Limited

As part of the comprehensive package, MKU Limited’s globally recognized bulletproof vests are also included. With a proven track record in international exports, these vests contribute to the Philippines’ defense readiness and personnel protection.

3. Previous Offers and Deliveries

Building on the momentum, India continues to stand by its prior commitments, with the impending delivery of the first batch of BrahMos missiles scheduled for next month. The previous offerings of LCA-Tejas fighter jets and ALH-Dhruv helicopters underscore India’s dedication to fortifying the Philippines’ defense capabilities.

4. Soft Loan Incentive

In a bid to enhance the deal’s allure, India extends a concessional loan featuring a mere 1.75% interest rate, a generous 20-year repayment period, and a 5-year grace period. This financial incentive aims to facilitate the Philippines’ acquisition of cutting-edge defense technology with favorable terms.

Geopolitical Implications: India’s Indo-Pacific Strategic Interests

This comprehensive defense offer signifies India’s unwavering commitment to bolstering its defense partnership with the Philippines. The provision of advanced military capabilities and the attractive financial terms emphasizes India’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region, as both nations deepen their strategic ties.

In summary, India’s multifaceted defense proposal not only elevates the Philippines’ defense capabilities but also solidifies India’s position as a key player in the global defense export arena, furthering its strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific.
