Indian Army Encourages Troops to Participate in Social Service During Leave

The Indian Army has initiated a program to encourage its troops to engage in social service during their leave, emphasizing “nation-building efforts.” All Army formations across the country are expected to provide feedback on this initiative every quarter starting from this month.

The directive suggests that soldiers on leave voluntarily choose a subject or domain based on their interest, competency, and the needs of their local community. They are encouraged to engage with citizens and make individual contributions to the Indian Army’s nation-building efforts.

While the primary purpose of granting leave to soldiers is to spend time with their families and address personal commitments, the Army sees potential in utilizing leave time to engage constructively with the local community.

The Army aims to leverage its diverse human resource pool, comprising individuals with various skills and character values, many of whom come from rural backgrounds. These “soldier ambassadors” are expected to interact with the local community, empowering and impacting citizens’ lives positively.

To support this initiative, Army units and formations are tasked with providing structured literature and content for effective soldier-community interactions.

The program covers various topics, including Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign), Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (Education for All), Rashtriya Ucchtar Shiksha Abhiyan (National Higher Education Mission), and other social welfare schemes. Soldiers will engage with local communities to raise awareness about these initiatives.

Furthermore, they will also discuss topics like insurance schemes such as the National Pension Scheme (NPS) and Atal Pension Yojana, livestock insurance, healthcare schemes, and vocational training programs, among others.

The Indian Army believes that this initiative will help strengthen its ties with local communities and contribute to the nation’s development. Feedback from all Commands will be collected every quarter to monitor the program’s progress.

This program aligns with the broader goal of encouraging civic engagement and community service among Indian soldiers while on leave.
