Indian Army Eyes Additional 18 Apache Attack Helicopters to Enhance Combat Capabilities

The Indian military is fortifying its attack helicopter arsenal through a dual approach, encompassing American-made Apaches and domestically manufactured Light Combat Helicopters (LCHs).

The eagerly awaited deliveries of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters to the Indian Army are slated to commence next month. The initial tranche of six helicopters from the United States is scheduled to arrive in May. This procurement stands as a distinct arrangement separate from the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) existing fleet of 22 Apaches.

While the initial deliveries mark a significant milestone, the Army is actively pursuing further augmentation. Plans are underway to acquire an additional 18 Apache helicopters. This decision stems from the Army’s inability to secure transfers from the IAF’s existing fleet, despite contributing funds towards their acquisition.

Conversely, the Indian Air Force appears to prioritize the indigenous Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) for its future attack helicopter requirements. This is evident in their choice to forego additional Apache procurements and concentrate on integrating the LCH into their operational fleet.

The Indian Army Aviation is positioned to become the principal operator of the LCH. A substantial order of 90 helicopters is envisioned for the Army, complemented by an additional 66 planned for the IAF. This comprehensive procurement, valued at ₹45,000 crore, underscores the pivotal role of the LCH in India’s forthcoming attack helicopter strategy.

The Indian Army’s acquisition of Apaches, coupled with the combined order of 156 LCHs by both the Army and IAF, marks a significant stride towards modernization and reinforcement of India’s attack helicopter capabilities. This enhanced firepower is poised to substantially bolster India’s military readiness on various fronts.

The Indian Army’s pursuit of additional Apache attack helicopters and the substantial procurement of LCHs by both the Army and IAF signify a notable advancement in enhancing India’s combat helicopter capabilities. This strategic initiative underscores India’s unwavering commitment to fortifying its armed forces and safeguarding national security interests.
