The Indian Army intends to acquire up to 1200 next-generation Towed Gun Systems (TGS), with an initial procurement of 400 units. This is a significant step towards bolstering its artillery capabilities. This procurement initiative signifies a significant step forward in India’s artillery forces’ modernization.

The TGS, designed to be within the 15-ton weight class, will integrate a variety of cutting-edge upgrades and features to improve its performance and adaptability. These enhancements include:

1. Laser-Based Ignition: The TGS will use laser-based ignition technology, which has many benefits, such as making shooting more reliable and accurate.
2. Software-Defined Radio (SDR): SDR will facilitate secure communication, guaranteeing that the TGS will remain interconnected and capable of seamless communication in a variety of operational scenarios.
3. Hybrid Drive: The incorporation of a hybrid drive system will allow the TGS to depart its firing position quickly and effectively. This feature improves operational mobility and adaptability.
4. Lithium-Ion Batteries: The TGS will be outfitted with Lithium-ion batteries, allowing for silent mode operation over short distances. This capability is especially useful for furtive and covert operations.

The TGS will also be equipped with a robust global positioning system (GPS) and an inertial navigation-based sight system. This provides the system with precise location fixing and orientation capabilities, enhancing its precision and effectiveness.

The fire-control system (FCS) incorporated into the TGS will provide an optical sight for indirect firing both during the day and at night, ensuring that the system can operate effectively under a variety of lighting conditions.

Several private sector companies, including Bharat Forge, Tata Defence, and L&T, are anticipated to respond to the Request for Information (RFI) and participate in the procurement process. These companies are well-known for their expertise in manufacturing and defence technology.

The next-generation TGS has an expanded range of specialized ammunition, including artillery shells propelled by Ramjets. These sophisticated munitions can engage targets from extraordinary distances, up to 80 to 100 kilometers. This increased range substantially improves the TGS’s ability to engage and eliminate distant threats.
