Indian Navy preparing case for 2nd Vikrant class Carrier: Admiral R Hari Kumar
New Delhi: In a significant announcement, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R. Hari Kumar on Friday said that the Indian Navy is contemplating the possibility of placing another order for an Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) following the successful induction of INS Vikrant and the formulation of a compelling case for it.
Speaking to reporters during the launch event of the advanced stealth frigate ‘Mahendragiri’, Admiral Kumar emphasized that with the construction of the indigenously produced INS Vikrant, the Cochin Shipyard has honed its capabilities in the field of aircraft carrier manufacturing.
“We are actively pursuing the development of a third aircraft carrier, one that will mirror the achievements of INS Vikrant. Substantial expertise has been gained in the construction of aircraft carriers, and we are earnestly considering a follow-on IAC with a repeat order. The groundwork for this endeavor is already underway,” Admiral Kumar stated.
At present, India boasts two operational aircraft carriers, namely INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant. The commissioning of the first IAC marked a significant milestone for the Indian Navy, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi officiating the ceremony in Kochi on September 2 last year. INS Vikrant stands as a proud emblem of India’s aspirations and its commitment to self-reliance in the realm of defense and maritime capabilities.
