The Indian Navy is on the verge of a crucial milestone in its plan to acquire 26 Rafale-Marine fighter jets from France’s Dassault Aviation. With Dassault having formally submitted their bid, the Navy is now in the process of finalizing its report on the proposal.
This government-to-government deal, valued at around Rs. 50,000 crore (US$6 billion), involves the direct procurement of these jets, bypassing the need for a lengthy tender process. However, several critical steps must be completed before the contract can be sealed.
Once the Navy’s report is complete, negotiations on pricing and other terms will occur between the Indian and French governments. Factors such as the prices paid by other nations for similar aircraft will be taken into account to ensure India receives a fair deal. Ultimately, the final approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) will be required before the contract can be finalized.
The acquisition of these Rafale-Marine jets is intended to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of India’s aircraft carriers, particularly the INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya. These jets are tailor-made for maritime operations, boasting features like folding wings and reinforced landing gear to suit carrier operations.
With the Navy’s report nearing completion, negotiations with France are expected to commence shortly. The conclusion of this deal will mark a significant milestone for the Indian Navy, reinforcing its ability to assert power and safeguard maritime interests.
