Indian Navy’s Naval Design Bureau is working on a conventional diesel electric submarine design with AIP system for the Project-76 to build 12 new indigenous submarines and latest reports indicate that it will complete the design phase by end of 2023 and the final approved design might emerge in 2025.

The Naval Design Bureau has been working on Super Kalvari class design of 3,000 tonnes displacement that will be stretched to accommodate an AIP plug-in and additional Vertical Launching System (VLS) plug to incorporate Long Range Cruise Missiles (LRCM).
The Indian Navy is keen to go for a clean slate design for the SSN program that can be converted into smaller 3,000 tonnes class for the development of conventional diesel electric submarines under Project-76.

The Naval Design Bureau is exploring two design options first is collaboration with Brazilian Navy as it has used the Scorpene class submarine as a base to develop a 6,000 tonne SSN, and the second option is the French offer of Barracuda Nuclear Powered Attack submarine for the SSN program and its conventional diesel-electric derivative known as Shortfin Barracuda for the Project-76.
