Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), India’s premier shipyard, has announced its intention to develop an entirely indigenous conventional submarine design by 2028. This initiative will be carried out in collaboration with the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB).
The new submarine will be a 3,000-ton vessel, expected to feature several advanced technologies. This project aligns with the Indian Navy’s Project-76, which aims to acquire 12 domestically-built, conventional diesel submarines equipped with state-of-the-art features such as Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP), Lithium-ion batteries, and possibly pump-jet propulsion.
Additionally, the Warship Design Bureau is working independently on a submarine design. It remains uncertain which design will ultimately be chosen by the Indian Navy.
This move comes as the Project-75I submarine program encounters new obstacles. Reports indicate that the unproven Spanish AIP technology in the S-80 Plus submarine is holding up the acquisition process, leading to a single-vendor situation with Germany currently being the sole contender meeting all tender requirements and guidelines.
This announcement marks a significant advance in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in the defense sector. By developing its own submarine design, India seeks to reduce its dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthen its domestic shipbuilding capabilities.
