Recent reports suggest that Vietnam is eyeing the Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMVs) developed by India’s Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). These vessels, tailored for anti-surface warfare, have garnered significant attention due to their advanced features and formidable armament.

The NGMVs are meticulously crafted to embody agility and stealth, boasting a minimal radar cross-section (RCS) to evade detection. Incorporating cutting-edge technology, these vessels mitigate infrared, acoustic, and magnetic signatures, enhancing their elusiveness on the battlefield.

Central to the NGMVs’ firepower is the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, renowned for its precision and long-range capabilities. This formidable weapon system, coupled with the option to integrate other anti-ship and land-attack missiles, endows the NGMVs with unparalleled offensive prowess.

CSL’s contract worth Rs 9,805 crore ($1.4 billion) to construct six NGMVs underscores its proficiency in developing state-of-the-art naval vessels. Scheduled deliveries starting from March 2027 signify a milestone in India’s naval modernization efforts.

Vietnam’s keen interest in the NGMVs mirrors the escalating tensions in the South China Sea region. With territorial disputes with China looming large, Vietnam recognizes the strategic value of possessing advanced naval capabilities. The NGMVs could serve as a pivotal asset in safeguarding Vietnam’s maritime interests amidst geopolitical uncertainties.
