India’s pursuit of self-reliance in underwater warfare reaches a new milestone with Project-76, an initiative aimed at designing and constructing next-generation conventional AIP powered diesel submarines. Unlike previous projects, the Warship Design Bureau (WDB) will spearhead the design phase, marking a departure from the involvement of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), the country’s premier submarine builder.
Exclusive Role of Warship Design Bureau
In a significant shift from the initial expectations, the Warship Design Bureau will solely handle the design phase of Project-76. Despite MDL’s extensive experience in constructing over 8 submarines, officials have confirmed their exclusion from this phase. However, MDL remains eager to participate in the manufacturing process once the design is finalized by the WDB.
Project-76 Objectives and Features
Project-76 aims to develop 3,000-ton submarines in two phases, with each phase comprising six vessels. These submarines will incorporate advanced features, including:
- Indigenous Technology: Inspired by India’s successful nuclear submarine program, Project-76 will leverage domestic expertise and technology, emphasizing self-reliance.
- Pump-Jet Propulsion: Embracing cutting-edge technology, these submarines will utilize pump-jet propulsion systems, offering enhanced stealth and maneuverability compared to traditional propellers.
Strategic Implications
Following the ongoing Project-75I, which involves the acquisition of six submarines through a global tender, Project-76 represents a long-term vision for India’s self-reliance in submarine design and construction. While Project-75I provides immediate access to advanced technology, Project-76 underscores India’s commitment to developing indigenous capabilities in maritime defense.
Opportunity for India
Project-76 presents a significant opportunity for India to emerge as a major player in submarine design and construction on the global stage. Successfully overcoming challenges and capitalizing on opportunities will be instrumental in achieving self-reliance in this critical domain, thereby strengthening India’s maritime defense capabilities and bolstering its strategic position in the region.
