India has announced plans for multiple missile tests in the Bay of Bengal, issuing three Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) warnings for test areas spanning 155 kilometers, 3,550 kilometers, and 3,560 kilometers. Scheduled between March 11 to March 21, 2024, these tests are shrouded in secrecy, but analysts suggest they may involve the K4 SLBM or Agni-V ICBM, possibly with an Air-to-Air or Air-to-Surface Missile system.
Potential 155 km Range Missile Tests
The 155 km test could focus on either Air-to-Air Missiles (AAM), enhancing aerial combat capabilities, or Air-to-Surface Missiles (ASM), providing strike capabilities against land or sea targets from airborne platforms. In these range, India have Astra Beyond Visual Range Air to Air Missile as well as Rudram Anti Radiation/Air to Surface Missile. Now it is to be seen whether any of these missiles or their new variants are tested or not.
Possible 3,500 km Range Missile Tests
On March 7, 2024, India declared a no-fly zone over the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean for a test effective March 13, 2024, covering 3,550 kilometers. This could involve the Agni-V ICBM or the K-4 SLBM, enhancing India’s strategic deterrence and sea-based second-strike capability.
Reports suggest the K4 SLBM might be tested from the INS Arihant SSBN to validate the missile system and other subsystems aboard the nuclear ballistic missile submarine.
India conducts such tests regularly, adhering to safety protocols and informing relevant authorities and maritime users through NOTAMs. These tests are crucial for validating India’s missile arsenal’s readiness and technological advancement.
