The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to enhance its training capabilities with the imminent delivery of the fifth LCA Tejas trainer aircraft, designated LT-5205. This development comes shortly after the successful first flight of the fourth trainer, LT-5204, highlighting a significant increase in production by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Milestones in Production

The IAF received its initial LCA Tejas trainer aircraft in October 2023, marking a major advancement in pilot training for the domestically produced light combat aircraft. HAL has since delivered four additional trainers, including LT-5205, all of which are undergoing flight testing and are scheduled for induction into the IAF.

Delivery Commitment

HAL has a contractual agreement with the IAF to supply a total of 18 twin-seater Tejas trainers. The company is on target to fulfill its commitment for the current fiscal year (FY 2023-24), aiming to deliver eight trainers by March 31st, 2024. The remaining ten trainers are expected to be progressively delivered by 2026-27.

Significance for the Tejas Program

The successful production and delivery of these trainers are pivotal for the IAF’s Tejas program. With a strong training ecosystem in place, the IAF can effectively train pilots on the Tejas platform, ensuring its optimal utilization in safeguarding Indian airspace. Moreover, additional orders from the IAF are anticipated, solidifying the Tejas’ position as a key component of the IAF’s fighter jet fleet.
