In a recent interview with Bharat Shakti Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale, Commodore A. Madhavarao (Retd.), who serves as the Chairman and Managing Director of Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), highlighted the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) profound admiration for the Astra Mk-1 air-to-air missile. Commodore Madhavarao didn’t just praise it as one of the best; he boldly declared it as the global leader in its category. This revelation coincides with the confirmation of the commencement of deliveries for the Astra Mk-1 to the IAF.

The Astra Mk-1 stands as a testament to India’s prowess in indigenous missile development. This Beyond-Visual-Range (BVR) air-to-air missile boasts an impressive range, soaring at over four times the speed of sound (Mach 4.5) during flight. After successful user trials conducted from Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets, the Astra Mk-1 is now in full-scale production at BDL.

Commodore Madhavarao confirmed that BDL has initiated deliveries of the Astra Mk-1 missiles to the IAF. The initial order from the IAF consisted of 250 Astra Mk-1 missiles. Moreover, the IAF’s trust in this missile system is underscored by a subsequent order placed in 2022. This second batch, valued at Rs 2,971 crore, reflects a steadfast commitment to the Astra Mk-1 program, with deliveries projected to conclude within six years.

The IAF’s enthusiastic endorsement of the Astra Mk-1 and its commitment through a follow-up order solidify the missile’s pivotal role in India’s air defense strategy. With its superior range and performance, the Astra Mk-1 furnishes the IAF with a substantial edge in aerial engagements, thereby ensuring a more formidable and well-equipped air force.
