The Indian Air Force (IAF) is steadfast in its pursuit of a formidable Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) capability, with ongoing attention on the Netra Mk1A and Airbus A-321-based AEW&C Mk2 programs. However, DRDO, India’s premier defense research organization, remains committed to the long-term vision of a dome-mounted AWACS solution, providing comprehensive 360-degree coverage.
According to reliable sources closely associated with idrw.org, DRDO is actively engaged in developing a dome antenna tailored specifically for the AWACS program. This initiative continues unabated despite the current emphasis on the Netra Mk1A and AEW&C Mk2 endeavors.

At present, the IAF operates three Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft equipped with the Netra Mk1A AWACS system, with plans underway to procure an additional six domestically enhanced Netra Mk1A aircraft. Simultaneously, radar technology development is progressing for the Airbus A-321-based AEW&C Mk2 program.
Both the Netra Mk1/1A and AEW&C Mk2 employ an Active Antenna Array Unit (AAAU) configuration, featuring two radiating planar arrays positioned back-to-back on the fuselage, providing a 240-degree coverage area. Nevertheless, the AWACS initiative aims for a dome antenna mounted atop the aircraft to achieve complete 360-degree coverage, offering a substantial advantage in aerial surveillance.

DRDO’s ongoing efforts towards the AWACS dome antenna underscore a forward-thinking approach. By maintaining progress in this technology, the IAF ensures readiness for a seamless transition to a comprehensive dome-based AWACS system upon program approvals.
