Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has started discussions with the Indian Air Force to finalize a contract for the procurement of the DRDO’s Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon (SAAW) and the company anticipates receiving orders later this year so that the production can start in 2024.

During the visit of Prime Minister Modi to Egypt later this month, India will also make an offer for the 100 kilometers range SAAW to the Egyptian Air Force that can be armed on Mirage 2000, MiG-29, and Dassault Rafale fighter jets.

SAAW is a lightweight, high-precision guided bomb designed to destroy ground targets, such as runways, bunkers, aircraft hangars, and other reinforced structures. Weighing 125 kg (276 lb), it has deep penetration capabilities, and carries a high explosive warhead, and has a standoff range of 100 kilometers (62 mi), which enables users to strike targets, such as enemy airfields, at a safe distance without putting pilots and aircraft in jeopardy. It is India’s first fully indigenous anti-airfield weapon, designed and developed wholly by the DRDO.
