In an effort to further strengthen Indian Navy’s strike operations, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Thursday (Mar 1, 2024) inked two major contracts with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL).
The deals worth US$2.36 billion will not only focus on the navy’s fire power but will also help to generate employment for several thousand over a period of 7-8 years.
Two contracts have been signed with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL). These include procurement of BrahMos missiles at Rs 19,518.65 crore. These missiles are expected to address combat outfit and training requirements of the Indian Navy.
“This project is likely to generate employment for nine lakh man-days in Joint Venture entity and around 135 lakh man-days in ancillary industries (including MSMEs) of the country,” the statement said.
The second contract with BAPL is for the procurement of the Ship-borne BrahMos system at a cost of Rs 988.07 crore. This system will be the primary weapon for maritime strike operations of the Indian Navy and has the capability of hitting land or sea targets with pinpoint accuracy at supersonic speeds.
According to the Ministry of Defence, over a period of 7-8 years, this project is expected to generate employment for approximately 60,000 man-days.
Since 2020 BAPL had successfully test fired the naval version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile as part of a series of trials being carried out by the three services.
BrahMos Aerospace, an India-Russian joint venture, produces the supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or from land platforms.
Financial Express Online has reported previously that India has already deployed a large number of the original BrahMos missiles and other key assets in several strategic locations along the Line of Actual Control with China in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. Previously it has been reported that the approval was granted for the procurement of 200 BrahMos missiles.
