Big Breaking : DRDO initiates fabrication of ERSAM missile of ERADS, often called Desi S-400 in the making

The DRDO has initiated the fabrication process for the ERSAM also known as Extended Range Surface-to-Air Missile and according to the tender documents, the ERSAM missile is expected to undergo testing later this year.

The ERSAM will have a range of 150 kilometers for fighter jet size targets and the XRSAM (Extra Range Surface to Air Missile) will have a range of 350 kilometers and both interceptors will be part of the ERADS system also known Extended Range Air Defence System which will be in the class of Russian S-400 system.

ERADS or or Extended Air Defense System is India’s indigenous effort to develop the long range Surface to Air Missile defence system similar to Russian S-400 missile system. ERADS is going to be a mobile, all-weather, multi-launch & net-centric Air Defence System. It will be able to detect & engage fighter jets, low RCS aircrafts, bombers, refuellers, AEW aircrafts, HALE & MALE UAVs & cruise missiles.

The missiles will be tipped with RF active homing head to acquire better accuracy during the terminal phase.

Each ERADS firing unit will consist of 4 ERADS launchers, 1 S-band search & track radar, 1 X-band fire control radar, 1-X band mast mounted radar for low flying target tracking. Each launcher of ERADS will carry 2 ERSAM & 2 XRSAM missiles. In total its firing unit will have 8 ERSAM and 8 XRSAM missiles in ready to fire condition.

ERADS is almost like the S-400 system in terms of capability baring few differences. The S-400 has 4 different missiles for different role and range, whereas ERADS will have only two of them for engagement at long and medium range. Also, the Maximum Range of ERADS for engaging targets will be 300KM, while that of S-400 is 400KM. But these small capability gaps can be easily filled with further extending the XRSAM range and integrating Akash and QRSAM Systems.
