DURGA 2: India's Very Own Laser Weapon Being Developed By DRDO Could Be Tested Soon
Directionally Unrestricted Ray-Gun Array DURGA-II

In a groundbreaking announcement, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has officially revealed the successful testing of a 100-kilowatt lightweight directed-energy weapon (DEW) named the Directionally Unrestricted Ray-Gun Array DURGA-II in 2022. This revelation comes as a surprise to defence experts, as DRDO had not disclosed any information about the testing until now.

Future Deployment and Advancements

Sources indicate that the test was highly successful, and further refinement tests are planned for this year. The weapon is expected to be officially inducted into the armed forces by the end of this year or early next year. This development is expected to significantly boost India’s air defence coverage, as DEWs are considered the most sophisticated air defence systems globally.

Capabilities and Innovation of DURGA-II

The DURGA-II can operate using laser, microwave, or particle beams, providing a cost-effective and innovative solution. It is anticipated to assist in obstacle clearance at airports and vertiports.

Significance of DEWs

DEWs use focused energy to destroy or damage targets, offering several advantages over conventional munitions, including speed and precision. The DEW project, known as DURGA-II, is a game-changer in the military domain.

Integration with Various Platforms

The DURGA-II project aims to equip the Indian Army with a 100-kilowatt lightweight DEW. According to a service official speaking to Defence News, this weapon system is also set to be integrated with sea, air, and land-based platforms. Defence analyst Girish Linganna notes that scientists have highlighted the potential for integration with various platforms.

History and Progress of DURGA-II

Reports on the DURGA project date back to the early 2000s, with significant progress noted after 2008. The development of a 25-kilowatt laser capable of targeting ballistic missiles during their terminal phase at a maximum distance of 5 kilometres showcases the advancement in laser weapon technology.

Addressing Challenges in DEW Development

Developing high-power laser weapons presents challenges such as providing adequate power and managing heat generation. Ensuring the beam remains focused despite atmospheric effects requires innovative lens technology. Additionally, countering adversaries’ countermeasures and addressing limitations in targeting multiple targets simultaneously are areas of concern that require further development and innovation.

Enhancing India’s Security

The DEW has the potential to neutralize threats such as Chinese or Pakistani ballistic missiles, significantly enhancing India’s security. Integrating the DEW with land, sea, and air-based platforms will further strengthen India’s defensive capabilities.

Challenges Ahead

Despite its potential, several challenges need to be addressed before the DEW becomes viable for use. Providing adequate power to the systems and managing heat generation are significant challenges. Additionally, ensuring the beam remains focused on the target despite atmospheric effects requires further innovation. Addressing these challenges will be crucial for the successful deployment of DEWs in the future.
