GTRE and IAF in talks with foreign firms for joint engine development for 5th gen stealth fighter AMCA
In the latest round of discussions, the DRDO’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) and the Indian Air Force have specified that the new engine should have a dry thrust of 75 kilonewton and 110-kilonewton thrust with an afterburner initially and later it should be able to accommodate another 10 kilonewton without requiring any engine core upgrade.
The GTRE specifically wants Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) to stay in India so that it doesn’t need to engage with the foreign partner for engine core upgrade for any future variant of the engine for 6th generation platform.
Both the GTRE and the Indian Air Force are keen to develop the engine in collaboration with a foreign partner from scratch rather than an existing engine.
Discussions and negotiations are underway with three global firms, General Electric from the United States, Safran from France and Rolls Royce from the United Kingdom. As per latest updates, the fight is mainly between French company Safran and American company General Electric.
