HAL preparing to conduct phased upgrade of IAF Sukhoi Su-30MKIs into Super Sukhoi standard

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the prominent state-owned aerospace and defense giant of India, has revealed an intricate three-phase strategy aimed at modernizing the formidable Sukhoi-30MKI fighter fleet of the Indian Air Force (IAF). This meticulous approach acknowledges the IAF’s imperative requirement for operational fighter aircraft while considering the significant cost and time constraints associated with such a monumental upgrade initiative.

In the quest to ensure air dominance and efficacy in strike missions, the IAF heavily relies on its fleet of over 250 Sukhoi-30MKIs. HAL, cognizant of the necessity to keep this fleet abreast of modern advancements and combat-ready, has structured a phased upgrade program with a primary focus on the older aircraft.

The inaugural phase is set to commence from 2025-26, targeting the upgrade of 84 aircraft with more than 50 crucial components. Leading the endeavor will be two flying test beds, paving the way for subsequent upgrades of approximately 20-25 aircraft at HAL’s Nashik facility and later at various IAF Base Repair Depots (BRDs). This sequential upgrading approach allows the IAF to retain a considerable portion of its Sukhoi-30MKI fleet operational while the upgrade process unfolds.

The initial phase emphasizes aircraft from the early batches inducted around 2002. These aircraft are slated to receive the comprehensive “Super-30” upgrade package, introducing significant enhancements across radar, avionics, weapons systems, and electronic warfare suites. This strategic prioritization ensures that the older jets receive the requisite upgrades first, thereby amplifying the overall combat effectiveness of the fleet while prolonging the operational lifespan of newer aircraft, which have been inducted within the past 5-8 years.

The decision to proceed with a phased approach stems from the considerable financial outlay associated with overhauling and modernizing such a vast fleet. By dividing the process into three distinct phases, HAL can effectively manage resource allocation while alleviating the strain on the IAF’s budgetary constraints. Furthermore, the acquisition of 12 new Sukhoi-30MKIs in conjunction with the upgrades serves to augment the IAF’s combat capabilities, potentially compensating for any temporary shortfall in aircraft availability during the upgrading process.
