Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Deputy Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF), suggests an optimistic outlook regarding the production rate of the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A. This projection coincides with the forthcoming inauguration of a third HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited) production facility in Nashik, expected by 2025.
The establishment of the Nashik plant is poised to substantially augment HAL’s manufacturing capabilities. Air Marshal Dixit indicates a potential increase in Tejas Mk1A deliveries, from the current 16 units per year to a projected 24 units annually.
The escalated production rate aligns seamlessly with the IAF’s procurement strategies. With an existing order for 73 Tejas Mk1A jets and ongoing negotiations for an additional 97 aircraft, HAL’s proposed increase in production to 30 units per year finds resonance. However, the IAF appears content with a more measured pace, aiming for 24 units annually.
Insiders familiar with the program disclosed to various sources that the IAF’s preference for 24 units annually is partly driven by pilot training requirements. Adequate time is needed to train pilots for the new Tejas variant, and a gradual increase in deliveries facilitates a manageable training schedule.
The prospective commencement of the Nashik production line and the IAF’s planned procurement of additional Tejas Mk1A jets mark a promising development for India’s indigenous fighter jet program. The accelerated production rate will not only bolster the IAF’s aerial capabilities but also foster the growth of India’s native defense industry.
