BIG: Indian Private firm awarded contract to manufacture full scale model of AMCA 5th Gen Stealth fighter
In a momentous stride towards the advancement of India’s indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program, a private sector entity has secured a contract to produce a full-scale 1:1 model for conducting stealth measurements. This achievement represents a crucial milestone in the AMCA program’s progress, particularly given that the final aircraft configuration has largely been determined following the successful completion of the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) in December 2022.
The AMCA 5th Gen Stealth fighter program, which has been eagerly awaited, currently awaits approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). Nevertheless, endeavors associated with the fabrication of the initial prototypes by the year 2026 are already underway, reflecting India’s unwavering dedication to enhancing its domestic defense capabilities.

A notable innovation within the AMCA 5th Gen Stealth fighter program pertains to the development of a specialized coating for the aircraft’s Radar Absorbent Material (Ram). This unique coating has been formulated by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratories and is slated to undergo rigorous testing at DRDO’s state-of-the-art Orange facility. The significance of this coating lies in its capability to substantially diminish the Radar Cross Section (RCS) of the AMCA 5th Gen Stealth fighter, rendering it less susceptible to detection by adversary radar systems.

It is worth emphasizing that the pylon system at DRDO’s Orange facility possesses the capacity to hoist payloads of up to 35 tonnes, thereby further underscoring India’s commitment to advanced technology and infrastructure in support of its defense initiatives.
A paradigmatic shift in the development of the AMCA program is the early-stage integration of stealth attributes into the design process. Diverging from prior practices where stealth considerations were treated as an afterthought, the AMCA program recognizes the paramount significance of stealth in a fifth-generation fighter aircraft. With a steadfast focus on stealth from inception, the AMCA aspires to emerge as a formidable and technologically advanced aerial platform.
The AMCA team is now embarking on comprehensive full-scale engineering development (FSED) plans for the aircraft. This marks a pivotal juncture in the program’s timeline, as it transitions from the realms of design and planning into the realization of an avant-garde fighter aircraft destined for service with the Indian Air Force.
