The Indian Army is considering the establishment of a specialized unit tasked with assuming the role of the adversary in military drills and wargame simulations. This prospective unit, known as “OPFOR” (Opposing Forces), is presently being deliberated upon and awaits final endorsement from the Army hierarchy.

Traditionally, Indian Army exercises have involved designated “blue forces” representing friendly troops alongside a vaguely defined opposing force. The proposed OPFOR unit aims to enhance training realism by delivering a more authentic and dynamic portrayal of potential adversaries.

Officials propose that the OPFOR unit would be formed by selecting personnel and resources from existing formations within the Army. These specialized troops would undergo training in the tactics, doctrines, and armaments utilized by potential adversaries. This enables Indian soldiers to confront a simulated battlefield scenario closely mirroring real-world conflicts.

The Indian Army currently employs a “REDFOR” (Red Forces) unit under its training command, ARTRAC. However, REDFOR primarily focuses on scrutinizing wargame strategies and exercises on paper or via sand table simulations. The OPFOR unit represents a significant advancement, providing live, on-the-ground opposition that regular troops can directly engage with during training maneuvers.

The establishment of a dedicated OPFOR unit underscores the Indian Army’s dedication to furnishing its soldiers with the most realistic and comprehensive training available. This heightened level of training will undoubtedly contribute to a more adept and efficient fighting force.
