Indian Navy to equip Lithium-ion batteries on Kalvari class submarines

The Indian Navy has issued a Request For Proposal (RFP) for the indigenous design and development of one set of high-capacity lithium-ion battery systems for onboard fitment and trials on the first Kalvari class submarine in 2025.

The contending companies will have to demonstrate their battery packs in a scaled environment before they are awarded the contract with a Lithium-Ion battery system.

The Kalvari class submarines will be able to stay underwater for a much longer duration and the lithium-ion battery has a longer service life with very little maintenance.
