The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced the upcoming launch of its meteorological satellite, INSAT-3DS, on February 17. Scheduled to take place at 5:30 pm from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR at Sriharikota, this mission aims to enhance meteorological observations, leading to improved weather forecasting and disaster warning capabilities.

Enhanced Meteorological Observations

The INSAT-3DS satellite, fully funded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), marks a significant advancement in meteorological technology. Designed as a follow-on mission of a third-generation meteorological satellite, INSAT-3DS will be positioned in geostationary orbit to facilitate enhanced meteorological observations. It will also monitor land and ocean surfaces crucial for weather forecasting and disaster warning.

Key Objectives

According to ISRO, the primary objectives of the mission include monitoring the Earth’s surface, conducting oceanic observations, and providing vital meteorological data. This will be achieved through the satellite’s advanced payloads, including a six-channel imager, a 19-channel sounder, a Data Relay Transponder (DRT), and a Satellite-Aided Search & Rescue transponder (SAS&R).

Collaborative Efforts

Indian industries have played a significant role in the development of INSAT-3DS, underscoring the collaborative nature of this endeavor. Additionally, various departments of the MoES, such as the India Meteorology Department (IMD) and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), along with other agencies and institutes, will utilize the satellite data to enhance weather forecasts and meteorological services.

GSLV Launch Vehicle Details

The launch will be facilitated by the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle F14 (GSLV F14), a three-stage vehicle measuring 51.7 meters in length and boasting a liftoff mass of 420 tonnes. The GSLV’s advanced configuration allows it to launch a variety of spacecraft for various purposes, including earth resource surveys, communications, and navigation.

The launch of INSAT-3DS represents a significant milestone in India’s space exploration journey, promising improved meteorological capabilities and enhanced disaster preparedness. With its advanced technology and collaborative efforts, ISRO continues to push the boundaries of innovation, benefiting not only India but the global community as a whole.
