The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is making significant strides in the assembly of the Tejas Mk2, the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) next-generation fighter aircraft. The assembly jigs and fixtures are expected to be ready by late 2024, setting the stage for assembly to commence by the end of the year. Component orders have been in place since late 2023, indicating a steady progression of the project.
Optimizing Assembly Process
To streamline the assembly process, the program has prioritized components based on their delivery times. Longer lead-time components have already been secured, while orders for faster-to-manufacture parts are expected to be issued soon. This approach ensures a smooth flow of materials, minimizing potential delays.
Rollout and Maiden Flight Timeline
The current plan targets a Tejas Mk2 rollout by the end of 2025, followed by its maiden flight in 2026. HAL-ADA, the developers of the program, have set a two-year timeline to clear the aircraft for basic weapon integration, paving the way for limited-scale production by 2028. The IAF is overseeing the clearance of advanced weaponry in separate phases.
Fleet Replacement and Procurement Plans
The Tejas Mk2 is slated to replace the IAF’s aging Jaguar squadrons, followed by the MiG-29 and Mirage-2000 fleets. The ambitious procurement plan aims to acquire nearly 200 units by 2040, significantly enhancing the IAF’s operational capabilities and modernizing its fleet.
HAL’s progress with the assembly of the Tejas Mk2 signifies a crucial milestone in India’s indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities. The aircraft’s advanced features and capabilities are poised to strengthen the IAF’s fleet and bolster India’s defense capabilities in the years to come.
