HAL unveils major plan to carry out Super Sukhoi program in batches
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India’s esteemed state-owned aerospace and defense conglomerate, is poised to undertake a substantial modernization endeavor aimed at elevating the capabilities of the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Sukhoi-30MKI fleet. Commencing in the fiscal year 2026-27, this initiative signifies a momentous leap in India’s quest to bolster its aerial combat capabilities in consonance with the evolving dynamics of modern warfare.
The envisaged upgrades for the Sukhoi-30MKI represent a sweeping transformation of these formidable fighter aircraft, with key focus areas as follows:
The main thing of this modernization drive is the comprehensive refurbishment of the cockpit. The incumbent displays will yield state-of-the-art, next-generation touch widescreen interfaces. This advancement promises to furnish pilots with heightened situational awareness, superior data visualization, and enhanced command over the aircraft’s intricate systems.
A pivotal component of this upgrade initiative is the seamless integration of a novel Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar system, meticulously developed domestically. AESA radar technology is renowned for its enhanced detection and tracking capabilities, auguring improved targeting precision and superior performance in electronic warfare scenarios.
The mission control computer, a linchpin within the aircraft’s avionics suite, will undergo enhancements to seamlessly accommodate the new radar, display systems, and other facets of modernization. This augmentation will guarantee the flawless integration and optimal functioning of the upgraded Sukhoi-30MKI.
The ambit of the modernization program may encompass a more sophisticated weapons package, potentially featuring advanced munitions and electronic countermeasures. This dimension aims to amplify the aircraft’s combat prowess, rendering it even more formidable in air-to-air and air-to-ground engagements.
Should this ambitious modernization endeavor secure the requisite approvals and fiscal allocations from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Indian Air Force (IAF), HAL is prepared to embark on a multi-year undertaking. The project envisions the modernization of approximately 20-25 aircraft annually, culminating in the entire Sukhoi-30MKI fleet transitioning to the new Super-30 configuration by 2034.
In order to validate the final configuration of these upgrades and execute indispensable testing, HAL plans to deploy two dedicated flying testbeds in Bangalore. These aircraft will play a pivotal role in scrutinizing the performance of major upgrades, including the forthcoming Uttam AESA fire control radar, which is currently in development for the program.
