The Indian Air Force (IAF) is gearing up to present a compelling case for the inclusion of six additional Netra Mk1A airborne early warning and control system (AEW&CS) aircraft in the forthcoming year. This enhanced iteration aims to complement the trio of operational Netra Mk1 AEW&CS aircraft already in service with the IAF.
IAF Advocates for 6 Additional Netra Mk1A along with 6 Netra Mk2: Wants to add 12 AEW&CS Aircraft to the already operational fleet of 5 such aircraft
The Netra Mk1A aircraft is slated to be outfitted with an upgraded Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar system, currently in the developmental phase by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). These aircraft will find their foundation on the Embraer ERJ 145 twin-engine platform, mirroring the structural configuration of the existing Netra Mk1 fleet.
The operational prowess of the IAF’s current Netra Mk1 AEW&CS aircraft was unmistakably demonstrated during the 2019 standoff with Pakistan, showcasing exceptional availability and effectiveness. These platforms play a pivotal role in delivering indispensable surveillance and early warning capabilities, empowering the IAF to vigilantly monitor and respond to aerial threats.
Concurrently advancing the Netra Mk1A initiative, the IAF is actively engaged in propelling the development of the Netra Mk2 AEW&CS program. This initiative endeavors to craft an AEW&CS aircraft grounded on the Airbus A321 platform, equipped with an advanced AESA radar system.
The IAF’s demand for AEW&CS aircraft presently stands at 18, while the current inventory comprises merely six aircraft, encompassing three Netra Mk1s and three Phalcon AWACS. The IAF envisions the induction of an additional 12 AEW&CS aircraft by the year 2030, a collaborative effort involving the Netra Mk1A and Netra Mk2 programs.
The acquisition of additional Netra Mk1A and Netra Mk2 AEW&CS aircraft will significantly augment the IAF’s situational awareness and surveillance capabilities, empowering it to adeptly defend India’s airspace and maintain a decisive edge in aerial warfare.
